Why I Support DMI

Our nation is desperately in need of voices that tell the truth about the reality of America today.

The Drum Major Institute is dedicated to speaking the truth, about the fact that our poverty rate is increasing even as the number of multi-millionaires reaches record highs, about the fact that our middle-class is disappearing, about the fact that we have rapidly become a nation divided into the very wealthy and powerful and then everyone else.

I know the conservative movement very well. And I know that their ambitions don't stop at just winning the White House or controlling Congress. They are aiming for nothing less than redefining the way Americans think about their government and our national priorities. What's more, they're winning.

And the only way we are going to win our country back is if we speak the truth, everywhere and anywhere. The Drum Major Institute is dedicated to telling the truth, no matter how unpopular it is.

Through their research, they tell the truth about the middle-class squeeze and the changing nature of the American Dream. Through their legislative scorecards, they tell the truth about how members of Congress--no matter which party affiliation--voted on the issues that matter most to us. Their Fellows--all community activists and organizers--tell the truth about the actual consequences of policy on real people and real families.

I am a big believer in the importance of Americans engaging in a serious conversation about our future. That's why I created Huffington Post. And that's why I value the Drum Major Institute. It isn't an elite club operating in the halls of privilege. They measure their success by their ability to influence the thinking of ordinary Americans, not by how many reports they produce. They are engaged in a conversation that appeals to our aspirations, not just our fears.

We need think tanks on our side. We need people with ideas grounded in progressive values of fairness and responsibility. I'm tired of reading that the conservatives are smarter. It's just not true. Progressives are often forced to fight battle by battle. We need groups like DMI that take the long view: to help make our candidates smarter, our policymakers more effective, our electorate more informed, and our agenda more resonant.

Please take a moment and give to the Drum Major Institute today.
